Purpose : The purpose of this study was to confirm the changes of muscle activity of the quadriceps femoris with changes of ankle and hip joint angles during sit to stand.
Method : Twenty-five healthy 20s to 30s year old women were participated in the study. the subjects performed standing up movements in 4 positions(standard posture; hip=90¡Æ / ankle=0¡Æ, posture on decline board; hip>90¡Æ / ankle<0¡Æ, posture on footboard; hip>90¡Æ / ankle=0¡Æ and posture on decline board with higher chair; hip=90¡Æ / ankle<0¡Æ). After then the muscles activity of rectus femoris, vastus medialis and vastus lateralis was measured with surface electromyography.
Result : The muscles activity of rectus femoris, vastus medialis and vastus lateralis at footboard application was measured statistically higher than at decline board with higher chair.
Conclusion : This study confirms that the flexion of hip joint had greater effect on the muscle activity of the quadriceps than plantar flexion of the ankle joint during sit-to-stand movement.
